This morning, I had a long walk, about 6.5 miles. After coming in, cooling down a bit, and having a nice shower, I wanted something to eat – something cool. Each week I will purchase 4 or 5 mangoes, so mangoes were on the menu this morning. They’re quite delicious. One of my favorite Zen quotes is: When hungry, eat. When tired, sleep. ~Hui Hua Like most things Zen, it is short and to the point, meaning do one thing…

Those helpful Aussies! As a kid, sometime around 6th grade, back in 1974, or so, I was a crossing guard. All through elementary school, we were taught not to jaywalk, but to cross at the correct place in the street, at the corners. The other day, a friend of mine, James, honked his horn and tried to get my attention as I was crossing an intersection. I told him later that that wasn’t going to happen. I was trying to…

Rather casually, and somewhat through necessity, I learned quite a bit of Portuguese. My ex-wife is Brazilian and when her parents would come to visit, I would have to speak to them in Portuguese, as they didn’t speak any English. I really didn’t know how much…

Do I miss my dog, Hobbs? Of course. However, like most things in life, if you look for them, they are made up of gains and losses. I lost a friend; however, I have had a great deal of freedom. I still…

There are a number of things that I am happy that I’ve done in life, one of them is volunteering. Specifically, I learned so much in the short time that I did hospice volunteering while in Charleston. I got to see the affects of long-term care on the caretaker. I got a little training in the psychology and stresses of long-term care and, quite honestly, this helped me in taking care of Hobbs and not having feelings of ‘guilt’ when…

I was talking to a young lady and somehow we got onto the subject of hobbies, travel, etc. I told her of my adventures here and there and she was pretty impressed at all that I had done and am doing, though that was not the point of the narrative. When I mentioned that I don’t own a television and haven’t owned one for going on 5 years, she was somewhat stunned. At first, she thought that I was kidding…
